A single-word Pictionary generator
This page is the main Pictionary word generator with one hidden setting switched on: every entry has to be a single word. No idioms, no compound phrases, no slip on a banana peel. What is left is about 2952 words that span all 24 categories and all three difficulty tiers, from cat and pizza at the bottom to kaleidoscope, hibernate and schadenfreude at the top. Use the Difficulty, Category and Audience menus as normal; the single-word rule sits underneath them and never comes off on this page.
Why single words make a fairer game
A phrase has two failure points: the drawing and the wording. Your team can see a perfectly good sketch of a cat leaving a bag and still lose the round by saying “the cat’s out of the bag” instead of let the cat out of the bag, because Pictionary scores only the exact words on the card. A single word removes the second failure point. If the picture is recognised, the round is won. That makes single-word rounds the right choice whenever the players are not on equal footing: a mixed-age family, a class with a few strong readers and a few weak ones, or a party where half the table is playing in a second language. Who this page is for
- Fast rounds. Single words are guessed sooner, so a 30-second timer works and a table of ten draws twice in twenty minutes. Set Words per turn to 3 for a rapid-fire variant where the drawer works through all three.
- Young players. Under-eights guess in single words anyway. A six-year-old will shout “duck!” at the right moment but will never assemble duck duck goose. Pair this page with the Kids audience, or go straight to the toddler set.
- ESL and vocabulary lessons. One word, one picture, one meaning. Teachers pick a single category (Animals, Food, Clothing, Body) and the round becomes a vocabulary drill that nobody notices is a drill. The classroom page has lesson-length formats.

Every category and every tier, still single words
Filtering by length does not flatten the game. The easy tier alone has about 1421 single words, the concrete nouns and simple verbs that make the easy generator what it is: giraffe, ladder, waffle, swim. The medium tier adds detail, flamingo, lighthouse, juggle, skyscraper, typewriter. And the hard tier keeps about 424 genuinely difficult single words: procrastinate, eavesdrop, moonwalk, photosynthesis, déjà vu, wanderlust. So a single-word game can still climb from a warm-up to a finale; set Difficulty to Hard and see how a team draws narwhal. The only category that nearly vanishes is Idioms & Phrases, which by nature is almost all phrases.
Running a one-word round
Play the official way but with a shorter clock. The drawer presses New word, reads it, and presses Start; guessers shout single words back. No letters, numbers, symbols or gestures from the drawer, and the exact word is still required (duck is not bird, flamingo is not bird either). Because single words are guessed quickly, a tie-break of one medium word each is a fair way to settle a drawn game. If you want the classic five-line card instead, Classic card mode works with this preset too: P, O, A and D, all single words.

The moment the table starts guessing in under five seconds, switch to the phrases page, where every entry is two words or more and the drawer learns to put a row of dashes on the paper first.
