A medium word generator, and why most games end up here
This page is the main Pictionary word generator locked to the medium tier: about 3760 words that sit between cat and déjà vu. Ask a group of adults and older kids to play for an hour and this is the difficulty they drift to on their own. Easy words are guessed before the pen leaves the paper; hard words stall when the drawer has no shape to start with. Medium words such as flamingo, vacuum cleaner, juggle, detective and shooting star are all things you can picture, but each one asks for a second stroke, a bit of detail or a small scene before the guess lands. That is where the laughing happens.
What makes a word medium
Every word in this tier passes at least one of three tests. It needs a distinguishing detail: peacock is a bird plus a tail, hedgehog is a blob plus spikes, koala is a bear plus a tree. It has a verb or a scene in it: flip a pancake, walk the dog, shovel snow, roller coaster, ferris wheel. Or it is a familiar thing nobody draws every day: saxophone, unicycle, stethoscope, hammock. What it never is is an abstract idea; anything that needs a caption, a pun or an arrow to a concept lives in the hard tier.
Mixed-age tables
Medium is the natural compromise when teenagers, parents and grandparents share one game. A ten-year-old can draw a flashlight or a cartwheel; an adult is not bored guessing them; and nobody needs a phrase explained. Keep the audience on Everyone so the grown-up-only references stay out. If the age gap is wider than that, the two-phone trick works: the youngest draw from the kids page and the adults from the adults page, and everyone guesses everything. Teenagers who find the kids page babyish usually settle on this tier, which is why the teens page starts here.
Moving up from easy, and down from hard
The signal to leave Easy is a correct guess in under five seconds on every turn. The signal to leave Hard is a table that has gone quiet, with a drawer staring at a blank sheet and the timer running down. Both point here. Medium words keep the picture concrete while giving the drawer something to do for the full minute: an aquarium needs fish and a tank, a museum needs a building and a frame on the wall, a high five needs two people and a motion. You can change the Difficulty menu mid-game; the session list carries on so nothing repeats.

Timer and scoring for a medium round
The official 60-second timer was written for exactly this tier, so leave it there. The drawer presses New word, reads it, presses Start and draws; no letters, numbers, symbols or gestures, and only the exact word counts. For an All Play round every team draws the same medium word at once and the first correct guess takes the point. If you own the board, Classic card mode deals a five-word card with one word per letter, and the medium tier fills the P, O and A lines nicely.
