New Year’s Eve Pictionary words for the wait until midnight

This page runs the Pictionary word generator with the Holiday menu set to New Year’s Eve: 46 words in the safe pool and three more with the Adults audience on. It is a small set by design, because the night has a short list of real things in it and every one of them is here: the icons (countdown, confetti, noisemaker, party poppers, sparkler, ball drop, clock striking twelve, “3, 2, 1!”), the traditions (New Year’s resolution, calendar flip, first day of the year, fresh start, staying up until midnight, black-eyed peas) and the jokes (the resolution you already broke, and for adults gym on January 2nd). The whole set sits on the easy tier, so it plays fast and nobody is drawing an idiom at 11:58.

    Killing the hours before midnight

The problem with New Year’s Eve is the four hours between dinner and the countdown, and Pictionary is the game that fills them without anyone having to learn rules. Start early with the Holiday menu on All holidays or Christmas, which holds the winter words (snow day pajamas, sledding wipeout) and is large enough for a long evening; save this set, the countdown words, for the last half hour with the timer dropped to 30 seconds. Two teams, a big pad on an easel, this page on the TV in Fullscreen with the guessing team facing away, and the scoreboard under the card running all night. The final word of the year should be the resolution you already broke. The rules guide covers scoring without the board.

    The resolutions round

One round belongs to the room rather than the generator. Every player writes a real resolution on a slip of paper and drops it in a bowl. Each drawer pulls one and draws it; the room guesses what it is and then whose it is, one point each. It takes about fifteen minutes with eight people and is the round everyone remembers in March. Come back to the generator afterwards for New Year’s resolution and fresh start, which now land differently.

    A mixed-age family party

With the Everyone audience, the set is safe for a family party where the youngest cousins are trying to make it to midnight: confetti, sparkler, party poppers and staying up until midnight are the drawings they will manage. Let children draw in pairs, use a 90-second timer for them and the official 60 for the adults, and put a child on the scoreboard so they stay in the game. The kids page has more family-night formats. Once the children are asleep, switch the audience to Adults and midnight kiss, champagne toast and gym on January 2nd join the pool, all clean. The adults page covers the late shift.

    Rounds to try

    • Year in review. Switch the category to Movies & TV and draw the year’s films from the movies list; the guessing team names the title and the month.
    • Noise round. Noisemaker, party poppers, midnight fireworks, “3, 2, 1!”: the drawer may not make a sound, which is the whole joke.
    • Time round. Clock striking twelve, countdown, calendar flip, first day of the year. No numbers on the page, per the rules, so the clock is the hard one.
    • Classic card. Classic card mode turns the set into five-word cards with letters, and All Play has every team drawing ball drop at once, ideally at 11:59.

    Other winter sets

The Holiday menu switches without leaving the page: Christmas for the week before, Valentine’s Day for the next party, and the holiday hub lists every seasonal set. The printable page turns this one into cut-out cards for the table.

    Frequently asked questions

What are good New Year’s Eve Pictionary words?

Icons: countdown, confetti, noisemaker, ball drop, party poppers, sparkler, clock striking twelve. Traditions: New Year’s resolution, calendar flip, staying up until midnight, black-eyed peas. Funny: the resolution you already broke and, for adults, gym on January 2nd.

Is it safe for a mixed-age family party?

Yes. With the Everyone audience the pool is countdowns, confetti, fireworks and resolutions. The three grown-up words (midnight kiss, champagne toast, gym on January 2nd) are tagged adults-only and stay out until you switch the audience to Adults after the children are asleep.

    Why is the set small?

New Year’s Eve has about 46 things worth drawing, so the set is honest about it rather than padded. It runs the last half hour before midnight perfectly; for the hours before that, switch the Holiday menu to Christmas (the winter words live there) or All holidays, or run a year-in-review round from the movies list.

How do you play a resolutions round?

Every player writes one real resolution on a slip of paper, they go in a bowl, and each drawer pulls one and draws it while the room guesses whose it is and what it is. The generator sits out for that round; come back to it for the countdown words at the end.

Can I play over video call at midnight?

Yes. Share this page in Fullscreen with Hide the word until tapped on, and have the drawer sketch on paper held to the camera. Time zones make it a longer night; the online guide has the full setup.
