A funny word generator, tagged on purpose

This page is the Pictionary generator with the Funny words only switch already on. About 1135 entries in the bank carry the funny tag, and they earned it one of three ways. They are small disasters (stubbed toe, lost luggage, printer jam), which are funny because everyone in the room has had them. They are silly objects (whoopee cushion, garden gnome, fanny pack), which are funny because of what the drawer has to draw. Or they are situations with a face (forgot my password, talk with your mouth full, the dish nobody eats), which are funny because the guessers finish the joke themselves. There are no rude words in the funny set. Silly is the whole idea.

    How to draw funny

Funny words are mostly medium and hard tier, because comedy needs a scene. Three habits help. Draw the reaction, not just the thing. For brain freeze, the ice cream is not enough; the face is the clue. Exaggerate. A double chin should be four chins. Use motion lines. Pictionary bans gestures from the drawer, but drawn motion lines, sweat drops and stink waves are all allowed, and they carry most of the joke. Give funny rounds the full 60 seconds; the drawer will use all of it, and the guessing team will spend half of it laughing rather than guessing.

Funny for kids, funny for adults

The funny tag sits on top of the audience setting, so the same switch behaves differently for different tables. With the audience on Kids, the pool is playground comedy: sneezing fit, bedhead, pants on backwards, the dog ate my homework, turkey costume. With Everyone, the everyday disasters join in. With Adults, you get the grown-up comedy of work and travel: reply all, middle seat, gym membership, the DMV, “you’re on mute”. Change the audience from the menu above; the funny switch stays on. The kids page and the adults page open with those audiences by default if you want to send the link.

    Game formats where funny wins

    • The consolation round. The team that is losing draws a funny word; a correct guess is worth double.
    • Every fifth round. On the main generator, flick Funny on for one round in five. It resets the mood of a tight game.
    • Art gallery. Keep every drawing. At the end, the table votes for the worst picture that was still guessed, and that player wins something.
    • Icebreaker. For a group that does not know each other, funny words with no score for the first ten minutes. Nobody has to be good at drawing; they only have to be brave.
    • Holiday comedy. The Christmas and Thanksgiving editions each have their own funny tier (tangled Christmas lights, stretchy pants).

    When it stops being funny

If a word is not landing with your group, press Skip; the timer keeps running so a skip is not free, but it is better than a dead minute. And if you find a word that is not funny to you at all, say so. The bank is edited by hand and the funny tag is a judgement, not a rule.

    Frequently asked questions

What are some funny Pictionary words?

Slip on a banana peel, whoopee cushion, stubbed toe, brain freeze, socks with sandals, the dog ate my homework, forgot my password, assembly required. The funniest are small disasters everyone has had, because the guess comes with a laugh of recognition.

    Are the funny words clean?

Yes. Funny on this site means silly or awkward, never rude. With the audience on Everyone or Kids, every grown-up reference is removed as well; with Adults on, you get the office and dating comedy too.

Why is a funny word harder to draw?

Because the joke is usually in a situation rather than a thing. Banana is a shape; slip on a banana peel is a shape, a person and a motion line. Give funny rounds the full 60 seconds, and let the drawer act out the motion lines with the pen.

Can I mix funny words into a normal game?

Yes. On the main generator, flick the Funny words only switch on for a round and off again. Many groups make every fifth round a funny round, or give the losing team a funny word as a consolation.

How many funny words are there for kids?

About 460 with the Kids audience: sneezing fit, bedhead, lost sock, turkey costume and their friends.
