An easy word generator, and what “easy” actually means

This page is the main Pictionary word generator locked to the easy tier: about 3263 words that a six-year-old can name and a nervous adult can draw. Easy words on this site follow a rule. Each one is a concrete noun or a simple action with a single, familiar outline: giraffe, ladder, waffle, swim. There are no phrases, no brand names and no ideas that need a caption. If a word made it into this tier, a rough sketch of it is enough, which is what makes a round fair when the drawer is small or the crayon is thick.

    Who this tier is for

    • Young children. Combine Easy with the Kids audience and the Animals, Food or Household Objects categories, and every word is something they have seen this week.
    • First-time players. A table that has never played needs a few wins to loosen up. Two or three easy rounds do it.
    • Large groups. With ten players, a 30-second timer and easy words, everyone draws twice in twenty minutes.
    • Language learners. Easy words double as picture vocabulary. Teachers using Pictionary in an ESL class usually stay in this tier and pick one category per lesson.
    • Warm-ups. Start easy, then move the difficulty menu to Medium and finally Hard as the evening goes on.

How to run a fair easy round

Keep the official rules but shorten the clock. The drawer presses New word, reads it, and presses Start; with easy words 30 to 45 seconds is plenty and stops the guessers from listing every animal they know. No letters, numbers or symbols on the paper, no talking from the drawer, and only the exact word counts (a duck is not a bird). If two kids are on a team, let them draw together on one sheet; it is louder and better. When the buzzer goes, press New word for the other team. The full rules cover scoring with and without the board.

    Easy words by category

Every category in the bank has an easy tier, so you can theme a game without making it harder. Animals and Food are the most recognisable and the usual choice for the youngest players. Actions are easy to guess but surprisingly fun to draw, because a stick figure sneezing looks nothing like a stick figure yawning. Places such as beach, castle and zoo reward drawers who can sketch a scene, and Clothing is a sleeper hit with children who love drawing a tutu. Browse the full lists on the word list hub, or print a set of easy cards from the printable page.

    When easy is too easy

The sign is a guess in under five seconds every time. Move to Medium first, not Hard: medium words like lighthouse, flip a pancake and roller coaster keep the pictures concrete but need a second look. Or leave the difficulty on Easy and switch the category to Idioms & Phrases, whose easy tier (raining cats and dogs, piece of cake) is a gentle way in to the hard-round style of play.

    Frequently asked questions

What makes a Pictionary word “easy”?

Three things: it is a concrete noun or a simple action, it has one obvious shape, and the guessers only need a common word for it. Cat, pizza, umbrella and jump are easy. Cat nap, pizza delivery and jumping to conclusions are not, even though they contain easy words.

Are easy words good for adults too?

Yes, for short rounds and big groups. With a 30-second timer, easy words keep a table of ten moving and give everyone a turn. Many groups play easy words for the first few rounds and switch to hard words once the drawing arm is warm.

How long should the timer be for easy words?

The official timer is 60 seconds, which is generous for an easy word. Try 30 or 45 seconds from the Timer menu to keep the pace up, or leave it at 60 when the youngest player is drawing.

Can I make it even easier for a four-year-old?

Set the audience to Kids as well as the difficulty to Easy, and choose the Animals or Food category. Those pools are the most recognisable shapes in the bank. The kids page starts with those settings.

    Do easy words repeat?

Not within a session. The generator keeps a list of everything it has shown you and only starts over when the pool is used up, which with all categories on takes hundreds of turns.
