How this Pictionary word generator works
Pictionary needs three things: a word the drawer can see and the guessers cannot, a clock, and a fair supply of words that nobody has already had. The box gives you cards, a sand timer and a die; this page gives you the same three things in a browser. Choose a category (or leave it on all 18), a difficulty, and an audience, and press New word. The word appears in large type with its category, its difficulty and its classic card letter underneath, and the 60-second timer is ready to start. Words you have drawn are kept in a session list, so the generator never hands the same word to two teams. When you want to change who is drawing, press New word again.
Two ways to play: random word or a classic card
Random word is the everyday mode. Set Words per turn to 1 for normal play, or to 3 if you like the house rule where the drawer picks one of three. Classic card reproduces a card from the box: five words, one for each of the original categories, P (Person, Place or Animal), O (Object), A (Action), D (Difficult) and All Play. Press Roll the die and the generator picks the category the drawer must use, with All Play meaning every team draws the same word at once and the first correct guess wins the round. Why difficulty and audience are separate settings
Most word lists mix “easy for a child” with “safe for a child”, which are not the same thing. Here they are two switches. Difficulty is about drawability: easy words are concrete nouns (giraffe, toaster), medium words have detail or an action in them (lighthouse, sneeze), and hard words are abstract or multi-word (procrastinate, the last straw). Audience is about who is in the room. Everyone keeps grown-up references out so a mixed table is safe; Kids also holds the difficulty to easy and medium unless you ask for Hard; Adults adds the office, dating and pop-culture references that make a grown-up party laugh, and it is still clean. There is no “dirty” list on this site and there will not be one.
The features the paper cards cannot do
- No repeats. Every word drawn in a session is remembered. Once the pool for your filters is used up, the generator tells you and starts over.
- Hidden reveal. Turn on Hide the word until tapped when everyone shares one phone. The word stays covered until the drawer taps it, and the timer starts on the tap.
- A real timer. Sixty seconds by default (change it from 30 to 120), with a quiet beep in the final ten seconds and a buzzer at zero. Mute it with the Timer sounds switch.
- Fullscreen. One press turns the card into a TV-sized display for a living room or a projector. Space bar starts and pauses the clock.
- Score and history. A two-team scoreboard and the list of drawn words live under the card. Copy the list to keep a record, or clear it for the next game.
- Copy link. Your settings are packed into the link, so the same filters open on another phone or next week.
Choosing words that are fun to draw
The best Pictionary rounds come from words that are hard to draw but easy to guess: a hummingbird is a scribble that everybody recognises, while a rhinoceros is a rectangle with an argument on the front. Our bank leans towards prompts like that. Every category has all three tiers, so a family can play easy words for the youngest player and switch to hard words when the adults take over, and the funny set is tagged separately for the rounds where the point is the laughing, not the score. Playing without the board
You do not need the box. Split into two or more teams, agree a number of rounds, and give each team a drawer in turn. The drawer presses New word, starts the timer, and draws; a correct guess before the buzzer scores a point, and then the other team goes. For the classic feel, use Classic card mode and roll for the category. For a video call, share the screen with hidden reveal on, or send each drawer the Copy link so they generate their own word.
