Pictionary for adults, without the awkward list
Search for adult Pictionary words and most of what comes back is either a list for children with the word “adult” pasted on top, or a rude list nobody can use at a family gathering. This page is the third thing. The generator opens with the audience set to Adults, which does two things: it removes the preschool favourites (no duck duck goose, no Bluey), and it unlocks about 9653 words written for grown-ups. They are references, not rudeness: jury duty, road rage, Sunday scaries, a blind date, the family group text. Every one is clean enough for the office party or the in-laws, and every one gets a bigger laugh from a room that has lived it.
What makes a good grown-up word
Children’s words are things. Adults’ words are situations. A child can draw suitcase; an adult can draw lost luggage, which is a suitcase, a carousel and a face. The best adult rounds come from prompts with a recognisable shape and a punchline the guessers supply themselves: assembly required, parallel parking, forgot my password, reply all. About 1203 of the adult words are also tagged funny, and the Funny words only switch under the controls narrows the pool to them. The rest lean on idioms, office life, travel, technology and the films and shows an adult table has actually seen.
Categories that shine with adults
- School & Office. Written for work parties: trust fall, inbox zero, performance review, two weeks’ notice, “you’re on mute”.
- Vehicles & Travel. Airports and traffic: middle seat, red-eye flight, speeding ticket, toll booth.
- Technology. Modern misery: two-factor authentication, butt dial, 1% battery, dial-up internet for the over-thirties.
- Emotions & Feelings. The ones with no shape: imposter syndrome, buyer’s remorse, existential crisis, FOMO.
- Movies & TV. The grown-up canon: The Godfather, Breaking Bad, Pulp Fiction, alongside the family films everyone knows.
- Idioms & Phrases. The traditional hard round. Pair it with the hard tier and a 45-second timer.
Formats for a grown-up game night
Classic. Two teams, this page, 60 seconds, first to fifteen points. Tournament. Four teams of two, each pair plays every other pair for five rounds, most points overall wins; the scoreboard under the card handles one match at a time. Sudden death. One minute, one word, and the team that guesses wrong loses a point, which makes people think before they shout. Couples. Partners draw for each other only, using Words per turn set to 3 so the drawer can pick the word their partner is most likely to get, and everyone finds out how well they really know each other. Mixed company
If children join later in the evening, switch the audience to Everyone and the adults-only set drops out; the session list carries on so nothing repeats. If you want the harder end of the adult set only, leave the audience on Adults and set the difficulty to Hard.
