Remote Pictionary fails for boring reasons: nobody knows whose turn it is, the word appears on the shared screen, the timer is on someone’s muted phone. Each has a five-second fix. This is the checklist we use, built around the generator; the mechanics are on the Pictionary online page.
Before the call
- Set the pool once. Open the generator, choose the audience (Everyone for a family, Adults for a team social), a difficulty and a timer length, and turn on Hide the word until tapped.
- Send one link. Press Copy link and paste it into the calendar invite. Every drawer opens it on their own phone; the settings travel with it.
- Write the teams and the order in the invite: “Team A: Priya, Sam, Lee. Team B: Jo, Max, Dana. Drawers rotate in that order.”
- Tell people what to bring: a thick marker and a few sheets of plain paper, or nothing if you are using the call’s whiteboard.
The first five minutes
- Camera check. Everyone holds a sheet with a big scribble to the camera. If it cannot be seen, they draw on the whiteboard instead.
- Sound check the timer. Press Start and let the ten-second beeps play through your mic. If people cannot hear them, unmute or ask the drawer to run their own timer.
- One practice word, no score, so the reveal-then-draw rhythm is understood.
During the game
- You call the drawer by name each turn. Do not wait for volunteers.
- The drawer reveals on their own device, says “ready”, and you press Start. If you share your screen, share it with the word covered.
- Guessers unmute and shout, or type in chat if the room is echoey. Chat guesses are easy to adjudicate later.
- Score on the card with the + buttons; say the score aloud after each turn so nobody keeps a rival tally.
- Skip is allowed once per team and the clock keeps running (the Skip button does this).
Formats that survive latency
- Fixed rounds, not a target score. Three drawings per player, then stop. Lag does not decide the winner.
- All Play finale. Direct-message one word to one drawer per team; everyone draws at once; first correct guess in chat wins. Chat timestamps settle ties.
- The gallery. Ask everyone to hold their drawings up at the end and screenshot the grid. Vote for the worst one that was guessed.
Word choice for cameras
Webcams are low resolution, so choose bold shapes: the easy tier and medium words from Animals, Objects and Vehicles read well; save Idioms and Emotions for a whiteboard. Keep Words per turn at 1. For an office group the adults set includes the call-specific comedy (“you’re on mute”, Zoom fatigue), which lands.
